Easy Ways to Fix Slow Internet on Windows PCs



Slow internet drives anyone nuts, whether someone is trying to stream, browse, or work on the internet. If you feel that your internet speed is slow compared to the usual speed on your windows computer, don't freak out. Here are the top causes of slow internet, and some effective solutions will help restore your internet to full speed.

 

1. Check for Applications Running in the Background That Are Utilizing Your Bandwidth

 

Problem: Sometimes the application is running in the background and using all the bandwidth, which makes browsing or streaming very slow.

Solution:

   - Disable Background Apps:

     - Open Task Manager using Ctrl + Shift + Esc and then click on the Processes tab, where you can see the applications that are using high bandwidth.

   - Disable Background Apps:

Settings > Privacy > Background apps: This is where you flip off the apps you do not need running.

2. Disable Windows Update Delivery Optimization

Problem: Something in Windows 10 and 11 called Delivery Optimization permits your computer to update itself by uploading updates to other PCs around. This might be performing in cracking on the internet.

Solution:

Settings > Update & Security > Delivery Optimization.

- Switch off Allow downloads from other PCs.

3. Update Network Drivers

Problem: Your network may have outdated or corrupted drivers which may worsen the connection speed and stability.

Solution:

- Update Network Adapter Drivers:

     - In the search field of the Start menu, open Device Manager.

     - Click on Network adapters, right-click on your adapter, and click Update driver.

- Reinstall Drivers-if this doesn't update:

   Right-click on your network adapter → Uninstall device → Restart your computer to allow Windows to reinstall it.

4. Change Wi-Fi Settings

Problem: If you're on Wi-Fi, a weak signal or crowded Wi-Fi channel will lower speeds.

Solution:

   Move Closer to the Router: Physical distance weakens the signal strength.

- Change Wi-Fi Channel: Log into your router and change the channel to a less busy one; for example, 1, 6, or 11 on the 2.4GHz band.

- Migrate to 5GHz Wi-Fi: If supported, it is generally faster but of shorter range; best used closer to the router, therefore.

5. Flush DNS Cache

Problem: An outdated DNS cache may cause slow connections to websites, which may result in slower browsing speeds.

Solution:

   Open Command Prompt as administrator.

   In the command prompt, type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit Enter. This will clear your DNS cache and may improve connection speed to websites.

6. Limit Bandwidth Usage on Windows Update

Problem: Windows updates may download themselves automatically and consume bandwidth in the background by using it whenever they feel like doing so, thus affecting your browsing speed.

Solution:

-Settings/ Update & Security/Advanced options/Delivery Optimization/Advanced options.

- Limit download and upload bandwidth for Windows Update.

7. Run the Internet Troubleshooter

Problem: Windows has a built-in troubleshooter to troubleshoot problems related to the network and internet. It can automatically detect problems and fix them.

Solution:

Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Internet Connections. Run the troubleshooter by following on-screen instructions.

 8. Upgrade Your Internet Plan or Router Problem

Sometimes, slow speeds can be a case of an older router or internet plan that does not fit your needs.

Solution

- Call Your ISP: Upgrade because your current subscription plan is too low for your needs.

- Upgrade Your Router: Newer routers have better speeds and ranges in addition to added stability.
