16 Billon Passwords Data Breach: Affected Services & Solutions
On
June 19, 2025, cybersecurity researchers confirmed one of the largest data breaches
in the history, which is approximately 16 billion data were breached containing
login credentials. In previous breaches, only passwords or usernames were leaked
but this time almost all sensitive data were compromised.
How
It Spread
It
spreads through Infostealer Malware Attack, which are designed to
collect usernames, passwords and other sensitive data from infected devices.
Affected
Services
The
leaked credentials included a wide range of online services like:
Social
Media: Accounts from
social platform like Facebook, Telegram, Instagram, TikTok etc.
Email: Email services like Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo
etc.
Corporate
& Developer Platform:
Including GitHub and various Corporate Portals.
Government
Services: Take access
to government related service portals.
Consequences
of Data Breach
Phishing
Attacks: Cyber Criminals
can use the stolen credential to launch any phishing campaigns.
Takeover
Account: With login
information attacker can easily take control of user accounts across multiple platforms.
Identity
Theft: Hackers can use
breached data for any criminal or fraudulent activity.
Solutions
Change
Passwords: Change
password from all possible platform as soon as possible.
Two-Factor
Verifications (2FA): Enable
two-factor verification in all services to add extra layer of security.
Use
Password Manager: Use trusted
authenticator app or password manager to generate and store strong, unique
password.
Monitor Account: Monitor Account activity regularly for suspicious behavior and unauthorised activity.
